Although the exact details of Astrid’s birth and very early childhood aren’t known to her, what she does know is that she was left as a toddler outside of the Our Lady of Loving Grace Orphanage in central Chicago about fifteen year ago.
Originally raised by the Sisters of the orphanage, Astrid had difficulty as a child relating to or socialising with the other children. The Sisters were originally concerned that Astrid’s insular and unfriendly personality meant that it was unlikely she would be adopted out. Astrid’s “salvation” however, came when she was eight years old in the form of Nathan Butler and Janice Sims.
Nathan and Janice were a married couple (Janice kept her maiden name) and were a pair of urban professionals in high flying jobs – Nathan a merchant banker and Janice a sales rep in real estate. Although the couple had no real with for a child, Nathan’s career progression hinged on being recognised as a “family man”. Janice was not willing to give a year or more of her life to carrying and raising a child, so the pair decided to adopt.
Astrid was lucky enough to be the first child that Nathan and Janice saw in the centre that matched their rather limited requirements (Janice wanted a daughter rather than a son). Although the Sisters of the orphanage had some reservations about the couple’s sincerity in adopting, they realised it was likely the only way Astrid would have an semblance of a normal life.
Astrid grew up from there with her new parents, though the couple rarely had time for her. She was regularly given books or other solitary activities that would keep her quiet while Nathan and Janice continued to live their modern inner-city lifestyle. Astrid was eventually sent to a Catholic boarding school, though things changed when she turned thirteen and Nathan and Janice’s marriage broke down through infidelity on Janice’s part.
Following a rather messy divorce (owing to the couple’s wealth), neither parent really wanted to take Astrid, but given that most family courts side with the mother, Janice ended up as the primary guardian. Janice for her part decided to take a job in Shermer – a small town in Illinois, and moved there with Astrid, placing the girl in the local Junior High. Property development was on the rise in Shermer and Astrid quickly became the small town’s primary real estate agent.
Astrid continued growing up in Shermer, progressing from Junior High to the local High School. Her rather solitary youth led to her struggling to make friends and she pretty much remained on the outer with all social groups within the school – only maintaining cursory relationships with a couple of other students that were outcasts like herself.
Academically, Astrid’s keen intellect has helped her to succeed, giving her a strong place within Shermer’s academic programme in all fields except Science. She has managed to become mostly fluent in Spanish, French and Polish. Currently in her Junior year, Astrid hopes to test well in her SATs and wants to apply to the Unversity of Notre Dame in Indiana, mostly at Janice’s insistance.
Astrid’s homelife is relatively solitary, with Janice out of the house most nights. Astrid has learned to fend for herself in more ways than one and tends to come and go as she pleases.
